Morrone 5 cairns race 14 August

July 2021

As part of the Grampian Highland Games Association (GHGA) events that are taking
place on Saturday 14th August 2021 in Braemar, there will be a small hill
race.
The race, which is capped at 40 runners due to COVID restrictions, will
follow the exact same route as the usual Highland Games race up Morrone
hill, just behind the games field.

The race starts from the Highland Games field in Braemar with one lap of
the field and then up the footpath towards Morrone hill. This footpath
meets a larger track which takes you left up the hill.
At the 5 cairns located roughly 2/3rds of the way up Morrone, the runners
will be sent back down the hill either via the same track or straight down
the heather (free choice) and over the deer fence, to rejoin the track
before heading back to the games field.
The race finishes with a final lap of the games field. There is a JPEG of the route map attached to the email.

There will be prizes for the first 6 men and women.

The race starts at 12:15 with registration opening at 11:00am in the games field.
When registering, please wear a face covering and maintain social distancing.
The race is 3 miles long with 1200ft of elevation gain.

Female record: Claire Whitehead 29:37 (2015)
Male record: M Hawkins 24:28 (1984)

All abilities are welcome. Runners must be over 16 years of age. Grippy footwear is highly recommended. No kit is required for the race; but please come prepared for whatever the weather conditions are on the day. There is no entry fee for the race.

In addition to the hill race, there will also be a full programme of events running from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 14th August 2021. This includes events such as; heavies, piping, dancing, tug of war, light events and track events.

If anyone is interested in participating in any of the track events, such as; long, high and triple jumps, 100, 220, 440yds and 1/2 mile races, there are still 7 places available.
