Eczema is the name for a group of skin conditions that cause dry, irritated skin. It often occurs in those sensitive to allergens (LINK TO ALLERGIES TODO). It can run in families, and often develops alongside other conditions, such as asthma (LINK to BREATHING TODO) and hay fever (link to ALLERGIES TODO).

Triggers, whilst unique from person to person, often include soaps, detergents, stress and the weather, causing the skin to become itchy, dry, cracked, sore and red. Some people only have small patches, but others may experience widespread red, inflammation all over their bodies, bringing with it, an increased risk of skin infections. There is currently no cure, and eczema can have a significant impact on daily life, which may be difficult to cope with both physically and mentally. Psoriasis on the other hand is thought to be an auto-immune disorder. Skin cells which are normally replaced every 3 to 4 weeks, are replaced every 3 to 7 days in response to the body attacking healthy skin cells by mistake. The resulting build-up of skin cells is what creates the patches associated with psoriasis. Psoriasis can run in families, although the exact role genetics plays in causing psoriasis is unclear. Possible triggers include injury to the skin, throat infections and using certain medicines.

Simply breathing in the salt contributes 70% of the benefit of salt therapy’s ability to combat skin conditions. The dry salt particles - ground to within 1-5 microns in size and released into the room - when inhaled, decrease the high levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE; an antibody) which leads to the body’s release of histamine. Lowering IgE levels, and thereby the amount of histamine released by the body, reduces the body’s overreaction to personal triggers. Salt is itself a natural anti-histamine thereby preventing any further symptoms associated with histamine release.

Salt also possesses anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, contributing the balance of 30% of the benefit to be gained. Landing on the skin, it tackles infections and redresses any imbalance of the skin’s microflora. It provides pH normalization and induces reparative and regenerative processes in the derma, increases skin rigidity, stimulating growth and improving hair health.

Salt therapy results in better breathing and clearer airways, allowing improved sleep, and reduced snoring. The resulting clean respiratory system naturally results in higher oxygen intake, increased energy and an improved immune system.

A majority of people who regularly include salt therapy in their wellness routine may find relief from a variety of skin conditions such as: psoriasis, itching, eczema, swelling & inflammation, dermatitis, dry & flaky skin, acne, rashes, rosacea, and skin-aging.
