Corri Black’s 40th birthday: Garden party and hill race.
We’re having a bit of a garden party/BBQ for Corri’s 40th birthday on the 25th June at Flinder Croft near Insch. And just for good measure, we’re going to host a short hill/forestry race in the hills behind us. A good warm up before the Lairig Ghru race on Sunday. This will be a handicapped race, with runners setting off in reverse order of ability. Prizes to astound and amaze.

It has been a long 18 months since I scurried round the hills near Ullapool for
two weeks wearing thigh-high leather boots and sporting a green mudpack and a
mohican. Although that mountain-marathon training program didn’t yield the
results I had hoped for, my look did land me a part in a film as an extra.
Since then some of you doubted whether the film would ever see the light of day,
but that day is fast approaching and The Eagle is due for nationwide release
next week.
To mark the occasion I’m organising a viewing of the film, to which you are all
cordially invited. The Vue cinema offered a group booking at a discounted price
of £5 per ticket, though it won’t be a fully private screening.
Unfortunately the only day both I and the cinema could do over the next three
weeks is Tuesday 29th March, which is the first Cosmic club run of spring. IT IS POSSIBLE TO DO THE RUN AT COUNTESSWELLS AND GO TO THE CINEMA.
Contact Seal Warrior #4 (Colin R) for details.

The final most brutal event of the year - The legendary Cosmic Mince Pie Championship will fall on the darkest day of 2010. This is the one off winter solstice special…….

Just thought we should record that at the recent Strathpuffer 24hr Mountain Bike event, while the two male Cosmic teams wimped out (you know who you are!) whingeing about potentially awful ice, snow, mud conditions, the women – Jenny Boyd and Mona Petrie aka the Deeside Divas – completed the event in style. In the early stages they were lying 20th (out of 42) pairs, but as they say “when the going gets tough the tough get going” – and they moved steadily up through the filed during the long cold night ti finish a magnificent 8th place overall in the pairs and 1st female pair! GIRL POWER!

Due to adverse condition reports received for Bennachie (sheet ice on paths makes running difficult), Saturday run is switched to a coastal run from Newburgh/Forvie Sands Nature Reserve. Meet at car park just north of Newburgh over the bridge over the Ythan NK00393 27055 for 9.45am start. You can go to Collieston and the Sand Loch and back by various paths. Snow will have melted here but it is likely therefore to be wet so 01224 316376. Note please do NOT bring any dogs as the nesting season for terns is about to start (info from Ewen). |

Cosmic Opportunity Missed?
Did anyone do the moonlit run at Kerloch on 31st December? I suspect a combination of weather/snow/other attractions kept most people, like me, otherwise occupied. Which means that we missed a rare (ish) astronomical event and the opportunity to do a BLUE MOON run.
Note: Due to slight differences between the standard calendar and the lunar cycle, once every few years you get a month in which 2 full moons occur. The second of these is called a “blue moon” (hence the saying once in a blue moon as it’s a relatively rare event). The Moon on 31st Dec was one of these. Nothing to do with the colour!

10 + 2 dogs (were these the beasts?) set out on Wed evening for the this month’s Cosmic Lunar run. The moon was out at the start, but higher up we were in cloud and mist. Most took the slippery rocks very carefully, also there were small patches of snow. The very bright torches carried by some were an obvious advantage – the little lightweight petzls just do not cut it under these conditions (can we have the details, please Matt?). The run was followed by a good convivial curry at the “Spice of Life” in Inverurie.
Thank you Matt for a great evening.
